The Newest Colchicums on the Block

Estimated read time 4 min read

Thanks to the internet, I know a lot about colchicums. Now I am growing colchicums that I would never have learned about if I hadn’t been able “meet people” on the internet.

I was sent some colchicums by a man who has extensive connections in the Dutch bulbs trade. We’ll call him “Mr. C”. He sent me a list of all the bulbs in his collection. I only chose those that I did not already own and hadn’t seen in the U.S. Some were already in bloom when they arrived, and others were still being shipped across the Atlantic. But I didn’t want to show them to you after another year.

Colchicum bivonae Apollo

Colchicum bivonae ‘Apollo’

I had another device. C. bivonae I bought a ‘Giona’ from Odyssey Bulbs . According to Odyssey Bulbs ‘Giona is hardy up to Zone 6 and I am a cold zone 5 In the Herb Garden, I also planted ‘Apollo.’ It was right next to a ‘Giona.’ Then, I planted ‘Apollo’ in the Herb Garden-right next to ‘Giona. Herb Garden It is the place where I planted all my “iffy plants” because it has the most drainage and warmest microclimate. I also suspected that ‘Apollo would have the same toughness as ‘Giona.

The ‘Giona,’ however, has thrived there and I am feeling brave enough to use it elsewhere in the garden (meaning that I have an extra corm). The ‘Apollo,’ which has a deep color and the typical C. tessellation is a good example. bivonae. It’s not surprising, since it was planted late, that ‘Apollo bloomed later than Giona’. I thought Apollo was darker. Next year, they may bloom at the exact same time.

Colchicum speciosum Gracia

Colchicum speciosum Gracia was the next to bloom.

The corms were sent to me, but only one of them bloomed. This was due to the rain, lack of sunlight, and the weather. Click Here What can I expect from the next year?

Princess Astrid aka Autumn Queen

Autumn Queen is another name for ‘Princess Astrid.’

The flowers of ‘Princess Astrid’ were also very colorful, but they came out so rumpled that I couldn’t tell you much more.

Colchicum William Dykes

William Dykes has an almond-shaped shape similar to that of ‘Jochem Hof,’ but without the intensity of Jochem’s color.

Colchicum Daendels

‘Daendels,’ however, looked similar to Gracia except for the yellow tube.

Colchicum September sun

C. C. C. named ‘September Sun.

Walter Blom was an American nurseryman better known for his hybrids. Daffodil Breeding . Walter Blom was friends with Mr. C’s dad. Before Mr. C named ‘September Sun,’ it was simply labeled as 803-5.

I look forward to seeing Colchicum macrophyllum settle down.

Colchicum macrophyllum

This species is captivating because of its tessellation. It is in my Herb Garden, as I am afraid it will not be hardy. Even if it survives the cold, the constant rain could be enough to kill it. Come spring, I’ll tell you if any leaves appear.

Colchicum Special Delivery

I saved my favourite for last. On the spreadsheet, it was called a “mutant of Colchicum speosum Album’. Walter Blom had sent me another. When it bloomed, I expected to see a pure-white flower of a peculiar shape. Perhaps like ‘Harlekijn. But no.

What emerged instead was this vibrant color and curvy goblet-shaped glass called ‘Album.’ Mr. C named it “Special Deliver”

Colchicum Special Delivery

Another picture. It’s really quite special.

In English, I’d call it a “Special Delivery” instead. Sport is a way to get involved with others. You can also find out more about the following: C. speciosum Album is a better term than album mutant . A plant that is a sport You can learn more about it here. A mutation is a desirable plant in its own right. ‘Special delivery’, for example, is a sports.

Walter Blom 403-2 was another hybrid that did not show up. This can happen when plants are shipped from afar. Next year, I’m hoping to see the blooms.

My membership in the Crocus & Colchicums Facebook group has taught me that many colchicums are available elsewhere that we don’t have. I would love to be able to grow a variety of colchicums, including ‘Jenny Robinson,’ ‘Flamenco Dance,’ ‘Teufelskralle,’ and Herbstkugel,’ that are not available in the United States.
